There was a time when I would think “I don’t need a block or a strap for any help in my practice”. That was definitely one of the reasons why the Iyengar style of yoga didn’t resonate with me as I found it too prop heavy. To me, it felt like you spent more time setting yourself up to be in the pose than actually being in the pose.

After I took my teacher training, my view of props completely changed. I learned that using props helps students find length and space and ease in poses. Where I once thought these objects were a nuisance, I started to see them as an enhancement.

Using props such as blocks, straps, blankets and chairs in yoga can offer several benefits:

  1. Alignment: Props helps all yogis achieve proper alignment in yoga poses, ensuring that the body is in the correct position to receive the full benefits of the pose while reducing the risk of injury.
  2. Accessibility: Props make yoga more accessible to people of all ages, body types, and levels of flexibility by providing support and assistance in challenging poses. They can help individuals with limited mobility or injuries adapt poses to their needs.
  3. Increased Flexibility: Props can be used to extend the reach and deepen stretches, allowing yogis to gradually increase flexibility over time. Straps, in particular, can help individuals reach deeper into stretches while maintaining proper alignment.
  4. Stability and Balance: Blocks, straps and chairs provide stability and support in balancing poses, helping yogis find their center of gravity and improve balance. This can be especially helpful for beginners or those with balance issues.
  5. Muscle Engagement: Props can be used to engage and strengthen specific muscle groups by providing resistance or assistance in certain poses. For example, using a block between the thighs in Boat Pose can activate the inner thigh muscles and strengthen the core.
  6. Relaxation and Release: Props such as a block or bolster can help facilitate relaxation and release in restorative and gentle yoga poses by providing support for the body in a comfortable position. This allows yogis to relax more deeply and experience the therapeutic benefits of yoga, such as stress reduction and muscle tension relief.
  7. Mindfulness and Awareness: Props encourage mindfulness and body awareness by allowing practitioners to focus on the sensations and alignment of their bodies in each pose. This heightened awareness can deepen the yoga practice and cultivate a greater connection between mind and body.
  8. Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation: Props can help prevent injuries by providing support and stability in challenging poses, reducing strain on joints and muscles. They can also aid in the rehabilitation process by allowing individuals to modify poses and gradually build strength and flexibility without exacerbating existing injuries.

Overall, incorporating props into a yoga practice can enhance the experience, deepen the benefits of each pose, and make yoga more accessible and enjoyable for yogis of all levels.
